Soysambu has many types of raptors, the one above is a juvenile Augur buzzard, probably the most frequent. Like the roller, they like to perch on a high vintage point and look for anything that moves!
This one seems to have a very disdainful look at me. May be I saved the life of a potential prey, to its dismay!
The Augur buzzard below is an adult displaying for me its superb feathers from the top of an electric post.
Birds of Soysambu

26 Aug 2012 African Grey Hornbill
This African grey hornbilll has found a delicious meal with this huge caterpillar! After beating the victim on the branch to kill it, it will swallow it with delectation!
25 Aug 2012 rufous crowned roller
This rufous crowned roller is not as striking as its cousin, but has the same sharp eye.
24 Aug 2012 In the plains and the bush
One of the prettiest birds in East Africa, the lilac breasted roller may not be the most sharing.
The one on the right would love a piece of this juicy insect. But if I recall correctly, it never did!
The rollers love to perch on electric posts or a dead tree in order to spot from high up the bug that makes the wrong move. They then open their wings in a flash of light blue, to fall on the poor insect whose last moment has come.
23 Aug 2012 Spoonbill
This photo to show that with the proper light, even the spoonbill can look good!
21 Aug 2012 Missed!
The fish eagle is another frequent visitor of our lake. This one just missed his prey.
20 Aug 2012 Avocet and black winged stilt
The lake shores hosts several of these small long legged birds like this black winged stilt and the pied avocet below.
19 Aug 2012 Cormorant
This great cormorant is also a regular visitor to our lake, here drying its feathers which do not have the efficient waterproofing that the ducks have. The blacksmith plover in front seems impressed by this green eyed giant.
18 Aug 2012 Crowned crane nuptial dance
The nuptial dance of the crowned crane represents a major effort for the male on the right. This lady is obviously difficult to convince, but on the last image we see that she succumbs to the charm!
